All CBL faculty undergo annual reviews each year. In addition, each faculty member undergoes a broader review at several points in their careers, some of which are tied to promotion and tenure. Here we provide an overview of each, but note that full details are provided in the 2012 UMCES Policies Manual.

All CBL faculty, regardless of rank are subject to an annual review. The schedule of additional reviews depends on rank as laid out below. Follow the links in the table for specific instructions.

Informed by December 31. Written materials due to Director's office by February 1. Transmitted to President by April 15.

TENURE TRACK

Year 1 Probationary Review

UMCES Policy II-1.00.III.B.3

Provide guidance and advice at mid-point of pre-tenure period
During the third fiscal year of appointment. Notified by June 30 of second fiscal year if contract will not be renewed. If reviewed, candidate notified by September 30 material by November 1. Recommendation by Lab Director by May 31. Decision by June 30.
Lab Director principally, but does involve input from tenured-colleagues. Lab Director recommendation and President final decision.

Promotion and Tenure Review

Formal evaluation of performance over prior 5 years. Notified by Director by September 30 of tenure year, package due by October 30. Decision by July 1 following year. Early promotion can be requested by candidate. P&T committee appointed. Involves internal and external review. Lab Director recommendation and President final decision.

Formal evaluation of performance over prior 5 years since tenure. Notified by Director by September 30 of tenure year, package due by October 30. Decision by July 1 following year. Early promotion can be requested by candidate. Promotion committee appointed. Involves internal and external review. Lab Director recommendation and President final decision.

5-year Post Tenure Review

UMCES Poicy II -1-19

Formal evaluation of performance over prior 5 years. Director notified by President's office of initiation of review by September 1. Director can request waive of review based on prior 5-year performance. Materials due by October 1. Internal Center-wide committee formed, appointed by President. Involves internal and external evaluation.

We are using Moodle to the extent possible to undertake all reviews which means we no longer have to prepare, copy and mail out binders full of information for each review.
